20,310 feet
Answer
20,310 feet
Denali, the highest mountain in the United States, rises to 20,310 feet above sea level.
Denali is in Alaska’s Alaska Range and is also the highest mountain in North America. The U.S. Geological Survey established the current official elevation in 2015 after a modern measurement using satellite and GPS techniques. Earlier official figures listed the summit as 20,320 feet.
The mountain was widely known as Mount McKinley in federal usage for much of the twentieth century. In 2015, the federal government restored the name Denali, which comes from Koyukon Athabascan usage and means “the tall one.” The name change did not alter the mountain’s elevation or geographic status.
Denali’s great vertical prominence is partly due to its position on the relatively low Alaska plain. The mountain’s first widely accepted successful ascent took place in 1913, led by Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, Walter Harper, and Robert Tatum. Severe weather, altitude, and technical climbing make the summit notably demanding.
