The Toyota Prius Prime’s electric-only top speed is 84 mph.
That figure describes the highest speed at which the Prius Prime can operate using battery power alone under its EV driving capability. Toyota reported that the plug-in hybrid could reach up to 84 mph on battery power, although actual operation can vary with temperature, battery charge, road conditions, and the selected drive mode.
The Prius Prime is not a battery-electric vehicle with unlimited electric operation. It combines a gasoline engine, electric motor-generators, a lithium-ion battery, and Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive. When the battery reaches its managed lower charge limit—or when the driver demands conditions outside the system’s EV parameters—the gasoline engine can start automatically.
The 84-mph figure is also easy to confuse with electric range. Speed and range are separate specifications: the car can travel at highway speeds electrically, but doing so consumes energy faster. The Prius Prime can continue driving after its EV charge is used because it then operates as a conventional hybrid.
