What is the Egyptian breakfast dish of fava beans, garlic, and lemon called?

The story behind the answer

The Egyptian breakfast dish of fava beans, garlic, and lemon is called ful medames.

Ful medames consists of cooked fava beans seasoned with ingredients such as olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, and salt. Diners commonly eat it with bread, chopped vegetables, or boiled eggs.

The dish is strongly associated with Egypt and is also eaten across Sudan, the Levant, and the Arabian Peninsula. Its name comes from Egyptian Arabic and is often translated as “buried beans,” referring to an old cooking method using a buried pot.

Ful medames is not the same as koshari, which combines rice, lentils, pasta, chickpeas, and tomato sauce. It is also distinct from falafel, which is usually made from ground legumes and fried.
