In the Western Christian calendar, Easter can occur as early as March 22. Counting backward places Ash Wednesday on February 4 and Mardi Gras on the preceding Tuesday, February 3. At the other extreme, Mardi Gras can fall as late as March 9 when Easter occurs on April 25.
