The deepest station in the London Underground is Hampstead.

Hampstead station’s platforms are about 58.5 metres below ground level, making it the deepest station beneath the surface on the London Underground. The station is on the Edgware branch of the Northern line, between Golders Green and Belsize Park, in the London Borough of Camden.

Its unusual depth is largely explained by geography. Hampstead sits on a steep hill, so engineers had to place the station far below the surrounding surface to maintain practical tunnel gradients. The station opened on 22 June 1907 as part of the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway.

The station also has the Underground’s deepest lift shaft, at roughly 55 metres. A frequent confusion concerns Westminster: its Jubilee line platforms are deeper below sea level, but Hampstead remains the deepest station measured from the ground above it. Hampstead Heath station, served by London Overground, is a separate nearby station.
