What is the deepest point in the Mediterranean Sea?
Answer
Calypso Deep
Answer
Calypso Deep
The deepest point in the Mediterranean Sea is Calypso Deep, which reaches approximately 5,109 metres below sea level. It lies in the Hellenic Trench in the Ionian Sea, about 62 kilometres south-west of Pylos, Greece.
Calypso Deep is part of a major subduction zone where the African Plate is being forced beneath the Aegean portion of the Eurasian Plate. That tectonic activity created the Hellenic Trench, a long, deep depression south of Greece and one of the most important geological features of the eastern Mediterranean.
The site was first reached by crewed submersible in 1965, when the French bathyscaphe Archimède reported a depth of about 5,110 metres. Modern measurements in 2020 recorded 5,109 metres with an uncertainty of roughly one metre, confirming the earlier expedition’s achievement. Hellenic Deep and Matapan Deep are related names or nearby deep-sea features, but Calypso Deep is the accepted answer for the Mediterranean’s greatest depth.
