What is the deepest lake in the world, located in southern Siberia?
Answer
Lake Baikal
Answer
Lake Baikal
The deepest lake in the world is Lake Baikal in southern Siberia.
Lake Baikal reaches a maximum depth of about 1,642 metres, making it deeper than any other lake. It is also the world’s oldest existing freshwater lake, with an estimated age of roughly 25 million years.
The lake contains about 20% of the world’s unfrozen surface fresh water. Its unusual age and isolation have allowed many distinctive species to evolve, including the Baikal seal, the only seal species that lives exclusively in freshwater.
Lake Tanganyika is the second-deepest lake, while Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake by surface area. These different records are often mixed up: Baikal holds the depth record, not the surface-area record.
