What is the deepest known point in Earth's oceans?

Challenger Deep is the deepest known point in Earth's oceans.

It lies in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean, east of the Mariana Islands. Modern measurements place its deepest surveyed area at roughly 10,900 metres below sea level, though the exact figure varies by survey and instrument.

The first crewed descent took place in 1960, when Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached the bottom in the bathyscaphe Trieste. In 2012, filmmaker and explorer James Cameron made a solo descent. Later expeditions have used crewed and uncrewed submersibles to make additional measurements.

At that depth, pressure is more than 1,000 times the pressure at the surface. The trench formed where the Pacific Plate is forced beneath the smaller Mariana Plate. Mount Everest would fit inside the trench with more than a kilometre of water above its summit.
