What is the currency of Argentina?

The story behind the answer

The currency of Argentina is the Argentine peso.

The present peso, coded ARS, became Argentina’s currency in 1992, replacing the austral. It was initially called the peso convertible because the Convertibility Plan fixed its value at one peso to one U.S. dollar. That fixed exchange-rate system ended in 2002 after a major economic and banking crisis, but the currency retained the name peso.

Argentina has used several different currencies called peso or related monetary units over its history. Earlier examples include the peso moneda nacional, peso ley and peso argentino, so dates matter when discussing Argentine money. The current peso is distinct from the peso argentino that circulated from 1983 to 1985.

The peso is divided theoretically into 100 centavos and uses the dollar-like symbol $. It is issued by Argentina’s central bank. A frequent mix-up is assuming that every historical Argentine peso refers to today’s currency; the name has been reused across multiple monetary reforms.
