The constellation in the shape of a winged horse is called Pegasus. It is named after Pegasus, the flying horse of Greek mythology, and lies in the northern celestial hemisphere, just north of the celestial equator.
Pegasus was one of the 48 constellations catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. It remains one of the 88 officially recognised constellations used by modern astronomers. Its most recognisable feature is the Great Square of Pegasus, a large four-star pattern that forms part of the horse's body.
The constellation is not a complete artistic outline of a horse; star maps differ in how they connect its stars. Its brightest star is Epsilon Pegasi, also called Enif, an orange supergiant that marks the horse's muzzle. Pegasus is also associated with the July Pegasids meteor shower and borders constellations including Andromeda, Pisces and Aquarius.
