What is the common name of the spider family Salticidae?

The story behind the answer

The common name of the spider family Salticidae is jumping spiders.

Jumping spiders are named for their remarkable ability to leap while hunting, escaping danger, or crossing gaps. They do not rely on a typical capture web for most prey. Instead, they use excellent vision to stalk targets and can attach a silk dragline before jumping, helping stabilize or protect them.

Salticidae is the largest spider family, with around 7,000 described species in nearly 700 genera. Members are recognized especially by their eye arrangement: the two anterior median eyes are very large, while three additional pairs surround them. This gives many jumping spiders an expressive, forward-facing appearance.

Their vision is unusually sophisticated for arthropods. Some species can perceive color and depth, using sight in courtship, navigation, and predation. They are often confused with crab spiders or wolf spiders, but those families have different body shapes and eye patterns. Jumping spiders are mostly carnivorous, although nectar has been recorded in the diets of several species.
