What is the common name of the amphibian family Bufonidae?

The story behind the answer

The amphibian family Bufonidae is commonly known as the true toads.

Bufonidae is a family within the frog-and-toad order Anura. Its best-known genus is Bufo, but the family now includes many other genera, including Rhinella, Anaxyrus, Bufotes, and Sclerophrys. Members are generally recognized by features such as dry, textured skin and prominent parotoid glands, which can produce defensive toxins.

“True toad” is a useful common label, but “toad” itself is not a precise scientific rank. Several frogs outside Bufonidae are also called toads because of their appearance or lifestyle. Fire-bellied toads, for example, belong to Bombinatoridae, not Bufonidae.

Bufonids occur on several continents and occupy habitats ranging from forests and grasslands to deserts. Many lay eggs in water, where their larvae develop as tadpoles. The cane toad, Rhinella marina, is one of the family’s most widely introduced and notorious members.
