What is the common name of Pan paniscus?

The story behind the answer

The common name of Pan paniscus is bonobo.

The bonobo is one of the two living species in the genus Pan; the other is the common chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes. Bonobos are great apes and are more closely related to humans than either species is to gorillas or orangutans, reflecting their shared evolutionary history with chimpanzees.

Bonobos live naturally in the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, mainly south of the Congo River. That river helped separate bonobo populations from common chimpanzees, which occupy regions north and west of it. Bonobos are generally slimmer than common chimpanzees, with a dark face, pink lips, and a center-parted head of hair.

The name can cause confusion because bonobos were once widely called “pygmy chimpanzees,” a label now considered misleading and largely obsolete. Their social behavior also differs on average: bonobo communities are often described as more female-centered and socially tolerant, though both species show complex cooperation, conflict, communication, and tool use.
