What is the common name of Cryptobranchus alleganiensis?
Answer
Hellbender
Answer
Hellbender
Cryptobranchus alleganiensis is commonly called the hellbender. It is an aquatic giant salamander of the eastern and central United States and the largest salamander in North America.
The hellbender has a broad, flattened body, a keeled tail, and loose folds of skin along its sides. Those folds increase the surface area available for cutaneous gas exchange. Although it has functional lungs, it spends nearly all its time in clean, fast-flowing streams and obtains most of its oxygen through the skin.
It is the only living species in the genus Cryptobranchus and belongs to the family Cryptobranchidae. Its closest living relatives include the Japanese and Chinese giant salamanders in the genus Andrias. The Ozark hellbender, Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi, is a subspecies rather than a separate species.
The answer is not axolotl, olm, or mudpuppy. Those are other salamanders: axolotls are Mexican neotenic salamanders, olms are cave-dwelling European salamanders, and mudpuppies are North American waterdogs in the genus Necturus.
