Answer
Common toad
What is the common name of Bufo bufo? It is the common toad.
The common toad is a widespread European amphibian whose scientific name is Bufo bufo. It is also called the European toad, and in parts of Europe people may simply call it “the toad.” The species has greyish-brown, warty-looking skin and usually hides during the day before emerging at dusk to hunt invertebrates.
Despite its association with dry woodland, gardens, and countryside, the common toad returns to water to breed. Adults often migrate to traditional ponds, where females lay eggs in long gelatinous strings. The eggs hatch into tadpoles, which develop limbs, lose their tails, and metamorphose into small terrestrial toads.
It should not be confused with the American toad, cane toad, or natterjack toad, which are different species. Bufo bufo is native across much of Europe, western North Asia, and parts of northwest Africa. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern, although road deaths, habitat loss, and disappearing breeding ponds threaten local populations.
