Japanese macaques are native to Japan, where they inhabit forests ranging from subtropical areas to colder mountain regions. They have thick brownish-gray fur, a pink or reddish face, and a short tail. Two recognized subspecies include the mainland Japanese macaque and the Yakushima macaque.
