The codename for the fourth-generation Jeep Wrangler introduced for 2018 was JL.
The JL succeeded the JK and was unveiled at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 29, 2017. Although production began in November 2017, Jeep marketed it primarily as a 2018 model-year vehicle. It remains the fourth-generation Wrangler designation.
The JL kept signature Wrangler traits such as a body-on-frame structure, solid axles, removable doors, removable tops, and two- or four-door body styles. At the same time, Jeep modernized the vehicle with a lighter structure, updated interior, revised powertrains, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and an easier fold-flat windshield.
The generation codes are easy to mix up: YJ denotes the first generation, TJ the second, JK the third, and JL the fourth. The JL also introduced newer technology and electrified variants, including the plug-in-hybrid Wrangler 4xe for the 2021 model year. Its round headlights and seven-slot grille deliberately preserve the Wrangler’s recognizable visual identity.
