What is the circular stained-glass window at Strasbourg Cathedral commonly called?

The story behind the answer

The circular stained-glass window at Strasbourg Cathedral is commonly called the Strasbourg Rose Window.

Strasbourg Cathedral’s west façade contains a monumental rose window, one of the building’s most recognizable features. Rose windows became a defining element of Gothic architecture because their radial stone tracery could support large areas of colored glass while turning light into a symbolic architectural display.

The Strasbourg window is especially notable for its scale and the repeated pattern of wheat ears in its tracery and decorative design. Wheat was an important local symbol and connects the façade’s ornament with the region’s agricultural identity. The cathedral itself was built over several centuries, so its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic phases.

A rose window is not simply any round window: the term usually refers to a circular window with radial tracery resembling petals. Smaller circular openings without that arrangement may instead be described as oculi.
