The chassis code for the first-generation BMW X5 is E53.
The E53 X5 was BMW’s first production SUV and was built from 1999 to 2006, with production concentrated at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. It used a front-engine, all-wheel-drive layout and shared some components and electronic architecture with the E39 5 Series.
BMW introduced the X5 as a luxury crossover rather than a traditional rugged off-roader. Its development followed BMW’s acquisition of Rover Group, which helped bring Land Rover-related expertise into the project. The X5 was replaced by the second-generation E70 in 2006.
A common mix-up is confusing E53 with E70, which is the next-generation X5, or with F15 and G05, which identify later generations. The E53 designation covers both early examples and the facelifted models, including the 2003 update that introduced revised styling and an updated four-wheel-drive system.
