What is the capital of the Canadian territory Nunavut?

The story behind the answer

The capital of the Canadian territory Nunavut is Iqaluit.

Iqaluit lies on Baffin Island beside Koojesse Inlet and is the territory’s largest community and only incorporated city. Its name comes from Inuktitut and is commonly translated as “place of many fish,” reflecting the area’s traditional importance as a fishing location for Inuit communities.

The settlement was known as Frobisher Bay for much of the 20th century, after the nearby bay. Its official name changed back to Iqaluit in 1987. When Nunavut was created from the eastern part of the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, Iqaluit became its capital.

A common mix-up is Rankin Inlet, another major Nunavut community. Rankin Inlet was considered in the capital debate, but residents selected Iqaluit in a 1995 plebiscite. Iqaluit is also notable for being Canada’s smallest territorial or provincial capital by population and for having no highway connection to the rest of Canada.
