Ljubljana is Slovenia’s political, cultural, educational, and economic centre. It stands along the Ljubljanica River in central Slovenia, between the Alps and the northern Adriatic region. The area was once home to Emona, a Roman settlement founded in the first century AD.

The city became an important medieval centre and served as the historic capital of Carniola under Habsburg rule. After the Second World War, it was the capital of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia within Yugoslavia. When Slovenia declared independence in 1991, Ljubljana became the capital of the newly independent country.

A common mix-up is Zagreb, which is the capital of neighbouring Croatia. Maribor is Slovenia’s second-largest city, while Graz is in Austria. Ljubljana is also known for the architecture of Jože Plečnik, whose urban designs helped shape the modern city and earned UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2021.
