Vilnius is Lithuania’s political and cultural centre, located in the country’s southeast near the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. It is the largest city in Lithuania and is famous for its extensive historic centre, whose Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical buildings reflect the city’s multicultural past.

The city was first mentioned in written sources in 1323, when Grand Duke Gediminas referred to it as his capital. Vilnius received city rights in 1387. It later became a major centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, attracting Lithuanian, Polish, Jewish, Belarusian, German, and other communities.
