The capital of Denmark is Copenhagen.

Copenhagen is Denmark’s largest city and the capital of both Denmark and the wider Kingdom of Denmark. It developed from a Viking-era fishing settlement on the island of Zealand, with another part of the city on the island of Amager. Its position on the Øresund gave it access to Baltic trade and made it strategically important.

The settlement was known as Havn, meaning “harbour,” before becoming København, or “merchant’s harbour.” Copenhagen grew into Denmark’s capital during the early 15th century and later became a major royal, commercial, and cultural centre. The Øresund Bridge now links the Copenhagen area with Malmö in Sweden across the strait.

A frequent mix-up is choosing Aarhus, Odense, or Aalborg. These are important Danish cities, but Copenhagen is the national capital and the seat of Denmark’s parliament, government, and monarchy. Copenhagen is also the capital of the autonomous Danish realm, which includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
