What is the capital of Colombia?

The story behind the answer

The capital of Colombia is Bogotá. The city is Colombia’s largest urban centre and the country’s main political, administrative, economic, and cultural hub.

Bogotá sits on a high plateau called the Bogotá savanna in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes. Its average elevation is about 2,640 metres above sea level, giving it a cool climate despite its location near the Equator. The city is surrounded on its eastern side by the forested Eastern Hills.

Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada founded Bogotá as a colonial settlement on 6 August 1538, after the Spanish conquest of the Muisca territory. It later became the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Granada and remained the capital after independence.

A frequent quiz mistake is choosing Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city and an important industrial centre. Lima is the capital of Peru, while Caracas is the capital of Venezuela. Bogotá is also commonly written with its accent mark, which reflects standard Spanish spelling.
