What is the capital of Austria?

The capital of Austria is Vienna. In German, the city is called Wien, and it lies in northeastern Austria on the Danube River, near the country's borders with Slovakia and Hungary.

Vienna is Austria's political, cultural and economic centre and is also one of the country's nine federal states. It is famous for classical music, imperial architecture, museums and coffeehouse culture. The city became especially influential under the Habsburgs, serving for centuries as a centre of the Holy Roman Empire and later the Austrian Empire.

The Romans established a military settlement called Vindobona on the site of modern Vienna. The Babenbergs made Vienna their seat in 1155, and the Habsburgs later developed it into an imperial capital. Vienna became the capital of the Austrian Empire in 1804 and remained Austria's capital after the First World War, when the modern republic emerged.

Innsbruck, Graz and Salzburg are prominent Austrian cities but have different roles. Innsbruck is associated with the Alps and winter sports, Graz is Austria's second-largest city, and Salzburg is strongly linked with Mozart. Vienna is the national capital and Austria's largest city.
