What is the capital of Australia's Northern Territory?

The capital of Australia's Northern Territory is Darwin.

Darwin sits on the Timor Sea at the northern edge of Australia and serves as the Territory's administrative, economic, and cultural centre. It is also Australia's northernmost capital city and an important gateway to Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and Timor-Leste.

The area has long been home to the Larrakia people, the Traditional Owners of the Darwin region. European explorers entered the harbour in 1839, and the place was later named Port Darwin in honour of naturalist Charles Darwin. The settlement was officially established in 1869 and adopted the name Darwin in 1911, when the Northern Territory passed from South Australian to Commonwealth administration.

A common mix-up is Alice Springs, which is the Northern Territory's best-known inland town and a major population centre, but it is not the capital. Darwin is also distinct from Palmerston, a planned satellite city southeast of Darwin that forms part of the greater Darwin urban area.
