What is the capital city of Mongolia, known for its name meaning “Red Hero”?

The story behind the answer

Ulaanbaatar is the capital city of Mongolia, and its name is commonly translated as “Red Hero.”

The city stands in the Tuul River valley in north-central Mongolia, surrounded by the Bogd Khan Uul mountains. It is the country’s political, economic, and cultural center, containing the national government, major universities, museums, and much of Mongolia’s population.

Ulaanbaatar developed from a movable monastic settlement called Örgöö, founded in 1639 for Zanabazar, the first spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia. The settlement moved repeatedly before becoming established at its present location in the eighteenth century. It was known as Urga in many foreign-language sources until the twentieth century.

The modern name was adopted in 1924 after the Mongolian Revolution and the establishment of the Mongolian People’s Republic. “Ulaan” means red, while “baatar” means hero. The city’s rapid growth has also brought severe winter air pollution and pressure on housing and infrastructure.
