What is the capital city of Calormen?

The story behind the answer

Tashbaan is the capital city of Calormen in C. S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia. It is the empire’s great political and cultural center and one of the most impressive cities described in the series.

Tashbaan is a large, crowded, walled city built on an island-like hill at the mouth of a river. Long bridges connect it to both riverbanks, making it the only crossing point for many miles. The city rises toward the palace of the Tisroc, the ruler of Calormen, with the Temple of Tash near the summit.

Readers encounter Tashbaan most prominently in The Horse and His Boy. Shasta and Aravis become separated there, while the city’s crowded streets and grand buildings create much of the book’s tension. Its heat, wealth, bureaucracy, and military power contrast sharply with the smaller northern kingdoms.

The other options belong to different Narnian settings. Narnia is the northern kingdom itself, Cair Paravel is Narnia’s royal seat, and Anvard is the capital of Archenland. Calormen lies southeast of Narnia, beyond Archenland and a great desert.
