What is the capital city of Belarus?

The story behind the answer

The capital city of Belarus is Minsk.

Minsk is Belarus’s largest city and its political, administrative and cultural centre. It stands in the country’s central-western region on the Svislach River. The city is also the administrative centre of the Minsk Region, although Minsk itself has a separate special administrative status.

Minsk was first mentioned in historical records in 1067. It later became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth before being incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1793. During the 20th century it served as the capital of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Minsk became the capital of the independent Republic of Belarus. A frequent mix-up is confusing Minsk with Brest, another important Belarusian city; Brest is near the western border, while Minsk is the national capital and largest urban centre.
