What is the birth name of Toots Hibbert?

The story behind the answer

Toots Hibbert’s birth name was Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert.

He was born on 8 December 1942 in May Pen, Jamaica, and later became internationally known by the nickname “Toots.” Hibbert was the lead vocalist of Toots and the Maytals, one of Jamaica’s most important ska, rocksteady and reggae groups.

His musical upbringing began in church: both of his parents were Seventh-day Adventist preachers, and he sang gospel music in a choir. After becoming an orphan at about age 11, he moved to Kingston to live with his brother John. There, while working in a barbershop, he met Raleigh Gordon and Jerry Matthias, who became his future bandmates.

Toots and the Maytals formed in 1961. Hibbert’s 1968 song “Do the Reggay” is widely credited with helping give the emerging genre its name. His career also included the Grammy-winning album True Love in 2005. The quiz asks for his birth name, not his stage identity: “Toots Hibbert” is the name by which he became famous, while Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert is the canonical full birth name.
