What is the birth name of dub producer Scientist?
Answer
Hopeton Brown
Answer
Hopeton Brown
The birth name of dub producer Scientist was Hopeton Brown, also recorded in fuller form as Hopeton Overton Brown. He became famous as a Jamaican recording engineer and mixer whose studio work helped define modern dub.
Born in Kingston in 1960, Brown learned electronics from his father, a radio and television repair technician. He began working around King Tubby’s studio and developed technical skills by building amplifiers and handling equipment. King Tubby eventually allowed him to experiment at the mixing desk, making him one of his protégés.
Brown adopted the name “Scientist” after producer Bunny Lee reportedly remarked on the young engineer’s technical abilities. He worked at King Tubby’s in the 1970s, then became a principal engineer at Channel One Studio, where he could use a larger 16-track mixing desk. His celebrated early-1980s releases on Greensleeves used playful science-fiction concepts while showcasing dense echoes, drops and effects. The main mix-up is with King Tubby, whose birth name was Osbourne Ruddock; Scientist was his younger protégé, not his real name.
