What is the average height of a horse at the shoulder?

The average horse is commonly described as standing about 14–17 hands at the shoulder, or withers.

Horse height is measured from the ground to the highest point of the withers, the ridge between the shoulder blades. The traditional unit is the hand, equal to four inches, or 10.16 centimeters. A horse measuring 15 hands therefore stands about 60 inches at the withers. Measurements such as 15.2 mean 15 hands and 2 inches, not 15.2 decimal hands.

The 14–17-hand range is a useful general guide, but horses vary substantially by breed and type. Arabians and many ponies are shorter, while Thoroughbreds and warmbloods commonly occupy the middle or upper part of the range. Draft breeds such as Shires and Clydesdales can exceed 17 hands.

One frequent misconception is that the shoulder itself is measured at the top of the front leg. In fact, the standardized point is the withers. Another mix-up concerns ponies: in many traditional classifications, an adult equine measuring 14.2 hands or less is considered a pony, although breed rules can differ.
