The Mona Lisa is approximately 77 centimeters tall.
The Louvre painting measures about 77 cm in height and 53 cm in width. Leonardo painted it in oil on a white poplar panel, rather than on canvas. Its relatively modest dimensions can surprise visitors, especially because the portrait's fame and the crowds around it make it feel much larger.
The measurement refers to the original Louvre painting, not to one of the many later copies. The Prado Museum's studio version, for example, is slightly different in size. Confusion can also arise because the Mona Lisa is often discussed in terms of its width, frame, or protective display case rather than the panel itself.
Leonardo's half-length composition, subtle shading, and the sitter's direct gaze give the portrait an unusually monumental presence despite its compact physical size. The painting is now displayed behind protective glass in the Louvre's Salle des États.
