What is the approximate height in meters of the Artemision Bronze?
Answer
2.09 meters
Answer
2.09 meters
The Artemision Bronze is approximately 2.09 meters tall.
The Artemision Bronze, often nicknamed the God from the Sea, stands 2.09 meters high—slightly taller than a life-size human figure. It is an ancient Greek bronze made around 450 BC and is now a highlight of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.
The statue was recovered from the sea off Cape Artemision in northern Euboea. It shows a powerful male figure pausing with one arm extended and the other raised, apparently about to launch a weapon. Most scholars identify him as Zeus holding a thunderbolt, although some argue that he is Poseidon wielding a trident.
That debate exists because the original weapon is missing. The pose, however, resembles surviving depictions of Zeus throwing lightning, which is why Zeus is the more common scholarly identification. The wreck site also contained the Jockey of Artemision, and the bronze was first discovered in 1926, with further excavation continuing in 1928.
