Answer
Samarkand
Answer
Samarkand
Samarkand is the ancient city in Uzbekistan famous for Registan Square.
Registan means “sandy place” in Persian and names the celebrated public square at the heart of historic Samarkand. The square is framed by three monumental Islamic schools, or madrasas: Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilya-Kori, built mainly between the 15th and 17th centuries.
Samarkand was a major settlement along routes associated with the Silk Road. Under Timur, also known as Tamerlane, it became the capital of a powerful Central Asian empire in the late 14th century. Timur and his successors sponsored architecture, scholarship, astronomy, and trade.
The city is sometimes confused with Bukhara, another historic Uzbek centre with major Islamic architecture. Samarkand's historic monuments were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. The city is also associated with the astronomer Ulugh Beg, who built an important observatory there.
