What is the anatomical name for the human voice box?

The story behind the answer

The larynx is the anatomical name for the human voice box.

Located in the neck between the pharynx and the trachea, the larynx houses the vocal folds. Air passing through the space between these folds can make them vibrate, producing the basic sound that the mouth, tongue, and other structures shape into speech.

The larynx also helps protect the lower airways during swallowing. Its framework includes several cartilages, notably the thyroid cartilage, which forms the laryngeal prominence commonly called the Adam's apple. The epiglottis is a flap associated with the larynx, but it is not another name for the whole organ.

The pharynx is a shared passage behind the nose and mouth, while the trachea is the windpipe below the larynx. This distinction matters because the larynx has both respiratory and sound-producing roles.
