Madonna and Child with Flowers
Answer
Madonna and Child with Flowers
The alternative title of Leonardo’s Benois Madonna is Madonna and Child with Flowers.
The small painting shows the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ, who reaches toward a flowering sprig. That flower is more than a decorative detail: its cruciform shape has been interpreted as a foreshadowing of Christ’s Crucifixion. Leonardo used the intimate exchange between mother and child to explore sight, attention, and emotional connection.
Leonardo probably painted the work around 1478–1480, early in his independent career after training in Andrea del Verrocchio’s Florentine workshop. It is now in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. The name Benois Madonna comes from the Benois family, who owned it before it entered the Russian imperial collection.
A common mix-up is with the Madonna of the Carnation, another Leonardo Madonna from roughly the same period. Madonna of the Pinks and Madonna of the Rocks are also separate works, not alternate titles for the Benois Madonna.
