What is Tesla's stock ticker, for the electric-vehicle company often ranked among the world's most valuable by market cap?

The story behind the answer

Tesla’s stock ticker is TSLA, the four-letter symbol used for the electric-vehicle company on the Nasdaq stock exchange.

Tesla was incorporated in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning as Tesla Motors. Elon Musk joined as an early major investor and became chairman; he later became chief executive. The company was named after inventor Nikola Tesla.

Tesla’s first production vehicle was the Roadster, introduced in 2008. It used lithium-ion battery cells and was based on the Lotus Elise sports-car platform. Tesla later expanded with the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, helping electric vehicles reach a much broader market.

The ticker TSLA is sometimes mistakenly written as “TESLA” or “TELS.” Stock tickers are exchange symbols rather than abbreviations that must reproduce a company’s full name. Tesla began trading publicly in 2010 through an initial public offering on Nasdaq.
