“You Are the Sunshine of My Life” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The Stevie Wonder single became one of his most successful American pop recordings.
The song appeared on Talking Book, released in 1972. Its affectionate lyrics and polished arrangement made it accessible to pop audiences while retaining Wonder’s distinctive vocal and keyboard-centered style.
The single also performed strongly on other Billboard charts, including the adult contemporary and R&B listings. Its broad success helped Talking Book become a landmark album in Wonder’s career.
This achievement is sometimes confused with the chart positions of other Wonder singles from the same period. “Superstition,” for example, also became a major hit, but the question specifically concerns “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.”
