What is Slovenia’s 25 June national holiday, commemorating its 1991 break from Yugoslavia, called?

The story behind the answer

Slovenia’s 25 June national holiday commemorating its 1991 break from Yugoslavia is called Statehood Day.

On 25 June 1991, Slovenia adopted the constitutional documents that established its independence from Yugoslavia. The declaration led to the Ten-Day War, after which the Brioni Agreement created a temporary suspension of implementation. Slovenia’s independence was internationally recognized in the following months and became effective in the wider diplomatic context in 1992.

Statehood Day is marked by official ceremonies, cultural programs, speeches, and public flag displays. A major state ceremony is traditionally held in Ljubljana, often at Congress Square or another prominent civic venue.

Independence and Unity Day, observed on 26 December, is a separate Slovenian holiday. It commemorates the announcement of the 1990 plebiscite result in which voters supported independence. The two holidays are connected historically but have different names and dates.
