Singapore’s national holiday on 9 August is called National Day.
The date marks Singapore’s separation from Malaysia and the establishment of Singapore as an independent republic on 9 August 1965. Singapore had joined the Malaysian federation in 1963, but political and economic tensions led to separation after negotiations between the two governments.
The annual National Day Parade is the centerpiece of the celebrations. It features military and civil-defense displays, cultural performances, marching contingents, aircraft, and large-scale multimedia presentations. Singaporeans also display the national flag during the National Day period. The holiday is distinct from Singapore’s earlier self-government milestones, including internal self-rule in 1959 and merger with Malaysia in 1963.
