What is Sherlock Holmes’s fictional London address in Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories?
Answer
221B Baker Street
Answer
221B Baker Street
Sherlock Holmes’s fictional London address in Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories is 221B Baker Street. Holmes shares the rooms with Dr. John Watson, who narrates most of the adventures.
The address appears in the Holmes canon as the detective’s home and consulting office. Baker Street was a real London street, but the numbering used by Doyle did not originally correspond neatly to an actual building. The famous “B” helped distinguish the rooms from the ordinary number 221.
After the stories became popular, visitors began sending letters to Holmes at Baker Street. When the street was renumbered, the address became associated with a real building, later occupied by the Abbey National building society. A Sherlock Holmes Museum now uses 221B as its official address, although the museum stands at 239 Baker Street under modern street numbering.
The address is often remembered as Holmes’s home alone, but it is also the setting for consultations, meals, experiments, and Watson’s writing.
