What is Shaggy's real first name?

The story behind the answer

What is Shaggy’s real first name? Norville. Shaggy Rogers is formally named Norville Rogers, although the nickname “Shaggy” is used so consistently that many viewers forget his given name.

The character first appeared in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! in 1969. He was designed as a lanky, scruffy teenager whose nervous speech, appetite, goatee, and frequent use of “like” helped distinguish him from the other members of Mystery Inc. His personality drew inspiration from Maynard G. Krebs, Bob Denver’s beatnik character in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.

“Norville” is the canonical name for the classic Shaggy Rogers character, though different Scooby-Doo productions can alter continuity or character details. Shaggy is best known as Scooby-Doo’s human best friend, a reluctant investigator who is easily frightened but repeatedly helps solve the mystery. His fear and enormous appetite are central parts of the character, not evidence that he is unrelated to the more formal name Norville.
