What is Saturn’s moon Pandora’s role in the planet’s ring system?

The story behind the answer

Saturn’s moon Pandora is an F ring shepherd moon. Its orbit lies outside Saturn’s narrow F ring, while the moon Prometheus orbits inside it. Their combined gravitational effects help confine and shape the ring’s dusty particles.

Pandora is an irregular, small satellite with a heavily cratered surface. It is sometimes described as a shepherd satellite because its gravity influences nearby ring material, although the dynamics of Saturn’s rings are more complicated than a simple two-moon barrier. Prometheus and Pandora can also produce disturbances and strands within the F ring.

Voyager 1 images led to Pandora’s discovery in 1980, and later spacecraft observations provided more information about its shape and surface. Pandora should not be confused with the fictional world in Avatar or with the mythological woman: the moon’s name comes from the Greek figure, but its scientific significance is its interaction with Saturn’s rings.
