What is Pikachu classified as in its official species description?

The story behind the answer

Pikachu is classified as the Mouse Pokémon in its official species description.

Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon and the franchise’s mascot. Its design features yellow fur, red cheek pouches that store electricity, pointed ears, and a lightning-bolt-shaped tail.

The species label is different from Pikachu’s elemental type. “Mouse Pokémon” describes its species category, while “Electric” describes its type in battle. This distinction is why “Electric Pokémon” is a plausible but incorrect answer to this question.

Atsuko Nishida created Pikachu’s original design, and Ken Sugimori finalized its artwork. Although the design is often associated with mice, Nishida has explained that squirrels also influenced the early concept. Pikachu later became especially famous through the anime as Ash Ketchum’s partner.
