What is Pandora’s name as a moon of Saturn?

The story behind the answer

Pandora is the name of a moon of Saturn.

Saturn’s Pandora is a small irregular satellite discovered in 1980 by photographs taken by the Voyager 1 spacecraft. It was initially designated S/1980 S 26 before receiving the mythological name Pandora. The moon orbits near Saturn’s F ring and acts as one of the ring’s shepherd satellites, alongside Prometheus.

A shepherd satellite helps shape and confine a planetary ring through its gravitational influence. Pandora’s role is linked particularly to the narrow F ring, whose complex structure is also affected by Prometheus. The two moons do not have identical orbits, and their interactions contribute to the ring’s changing appearance.

This moon is frequently confused with 55 Pandora, an asteroid in the main belt, because both were named after the same Greek mythological figure. Saturn’s Pandora is a natural satellite; 55 Pandora is a minor planet orbiting the Sun. The Voyager discovery therefore gave the ancient name a second prominent astronomical use.
