One of Spain's best-known celebrations centers on Madrid's Puerta del Sol. People traditionally follow the clock's 12 midnight chimes, eating one grape with each chime. The square's clock is also broadcast nationwide, making it a shared cultural reference point.

Nochevieja is distinct from Nochebuena, which means Christmas Eve, and Día de Reyes, Three Kings' Day on January 6. Spanish New Year celebrations continue into Año Nuevo, meaning New Year's Day.
