Napoleon's exact date of birth was 15 August 1769. He was born in Ajaccio, Corsica, shortly after the island had been transferred from the Republic of Genoa to France.

Napoleon was christened Napoleone di Buonaparte, and his family belonged to Corsican minor nobility. Because Corsica used local calendars and naming conventions, some older accounts give different dates or spellings, but 15 August 1769 is the standard accepted date in modern biographies.

His birthday later became politically important. Napoleon's religious feast day, the Feast of the Assumption, coincided with his birthday, and the date was celebrated during the First French Empire. Napoleon died on 5 May 1821, aged 51, while exiled on Saint Helena.
