What is Mount Everest’s officially recognized elevation above sea level?

The story behind the answer

Mount Everest’s officially recognized elevation is 8,848.86 metres above sea level.

Nepal and China announced this jointly measured height in December 2020. The figure includes the mountain’s snow and ice cap, which is why surveys must account for both the rock summit and changing surface conditions.

Everest lies in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas on the Nepal–China border. In Nepal it is called Sagarmatha, while in Tibet it is known as Chomolungma.

Earlier official measurements differed slightly. A 1954 Indian survey gave 8,848 metres, and China announced 8,844.43 metres in 2005 for the rock height. These variations reflect different methods and whether snow and ice are included.
