Michael Scott is the regional manager of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch in seasons 1 through 7 of The Office. Steve Carell plays Michael, the paper company’s famously awkward and often ineffective boss.
The title identifies Michael as the branch manager responsible for Scranton’s sales and day-to-day operation. His management style is usually unprofessional, but the series occasionally shows that he understands his employees and can make effective decisions under pressure. The Scranton branch becomes one of the show’s main settings and the center of Michael’s professional identity.
The position is easy to confuse with “assistant to the regional manager,” Dwight Schrute’s long-running self-described role. Michael also briefly pursues a corporate job in New York during season 3, but he does not receive that promotion and returns to Scranton. Near the end of season 7, Michael leaves for Colorado with Holly Flax; the branch’s leadership then changes, but regional manager is the canonical answer for Michael’s role across the stated seasons.
